Sleep and Desire: Why Rest Is the Most Underrated Aphrodisiac
Updated 2026-11-01 · Draft: awaiting expert review
Controlled studies show that restricting sleep lowers testosterone in young men. Links between sleep and desire in women are supported by observational studies.
Short sleep lowers energy, mood, and even hormone levels. Here is what research shows about sleep and intimacy, and how to sleep better as a couple.
What happens when you sleep too little
In a small but well-controlled study, healthy young men who slept only five hours a night for one week had noticeably lower daytime testosterone levels.
Beyond hormones, tiredness makes people more irritable, less patient, and less interested in closeness.
Sleep better as a couple
- Keep a regular bedtime and wake time, even on weekends.
- Make the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
- Put phones away 30–60 minutes before sleep; it also frees up time to talk or cuddle.
- Limit caffeine after early afternoon and alcohol close to bedtime.
- If one of you snores loudly or stops breathing during sleep, see a doctor: sleep apnoea is common and treatable.
