Alcohol and Sex: Liquid Courage or Mood Killer?
Updated 2026-11-01 · Draft: awaiting expert review
Strong evidence
The effects of alcohol on the nervous system and sexual function are well documented.
A drink can feel relaxing, but alcohol affects arousal, performance, and consent. Here is what to know.
What alcohol does
- Small amounts may lower inhibitions, but alcohol is a depressant that slows the nervous system.
- Larger amounts can reduce arousal and sensation, and make orgasm and erections harder.
- Long-term heavy drinking is linked to lasting sexual problems, hormone changes, and many other health risks.
Alcohol and consent
Someone who is very drunk cannot give meaningful consent. If either of you has had a lot to drink, it is better to cuddle and wait for another time.
Try instead
- Alcohol-free cocktails for date night.
- A warm bath, music, or a massage to relax.
- If you drink, keep it light and drink water too.
